Three Christianities: Calvin, Servetus, Swedenborg
There has been a growing interest in the life and ideas of 16th century Reformation heretic/martyr Michael Servetus, particularly among Swedenborgians, Unitarians and Socinians. The theological similarities between Servetus and Emanuel Swedenborg are particularly striking. As a small aid to better understanding the beliefs held by Servetus and by New Christians, a brief comparison is made of the theologies described in Servetus’ Restoration of Christianity, Swedenborg’s True Christian Religion, and Jean Calvin’s Institutes of the Christian Religion, with a particular focus on the respective doctrines regarding revelation, divinity, salvation, and the sacraments.
